Amos Frederick Potter was born in 1894 (Chesterton Q1-1894 3B:462), baptised 1st April 1894 in Little Wilbraham, son of Elijah William and Jane POTTER (née COOK).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Railway Cottage, Six Mile Bottom with his father Elijah W.POTTER [47] a railway porter born Thorrington, Essex; his mother Jane [46] born Little Clacton, Essex; brothers Elijah W [24] (railway porter), Charles [20] (bricklayers labourer), Albert J [15] (domestic gardener), Robert E [13](potboy at hotel) and Maurice [9] and sister Amelia [18]. All the children are recorded as born in Little Wilbraham. 1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at Six Mile Bottom with his parents and brother Bertie Charles. Brother Maurice was in the Army. In 1917, in Lutterworth (Lutterworth Q3-1917 7A:5) he married Ethel E. BRIGGS [7-1-1889] of Bitteswell, Leicestershire. They lived in Six Mile Bottom and had a daughter Ethel Elsie on 14-7-1918. After Amos' death she moved back to the Nook, Bitteswell. Brother Maurice was killed in France in 1915. see here.. |

He is not entered in "Soldiers Died" and his Army records have not been found. The 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards were at Maubeuge (close to the France/Belgium border) on November 11th. Amos died of pneumonia. Premont British Cemetery was used by Casualty Clearing Stations (the 20th, 50th, 55th and 61st), which came to Bohain in October 1918, and it was closed in the following December. |
